چکیده

High data rates give rise to frequency-selective propagation, whereas carrier frequency-offsets and mobility-induced Doppler shifts introduce time-selectivity in wireless links. To mitigate the resulting timeand frequency-selective (or doubly selective) channels, optimal training sequences have been designed only for special cases: pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) for time-selective channels and pilot tone-assisted orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for frequency-selective channels. Relying on a basis expansion channel model, in this paper, we design low-complexity optimal PSAM for block transmissions over doubly selective channels. The optimality in designing our PSAM parameters consists of maximizing a tight lower bound on the average channel capacity that is shown to be equivalent to the minimization of the minimum mean-square channel estimation error. Numerical results corroborate our theoretical designs.

Frequency-domain Equalization of Single Carrier Transmissions over Doubly Selective Channels

Wireless communication systems targeting at broadband and mobile transmissions commonly face the challenge of fading channels that are both time and frequency selective. Therefore, design of effective equalization and estimation algorithms for such channels becomes a fundamental problem. Although multi-carrier transmissions demonstrate prominent potential to combat doubly selective fading, seve...

Multiuser MIMO downlink transmission with BEM-based limited feedback over doubly selective channels

This article studies the problem of limited feedback design for heterogeneous multiuser (MU) transmissions over timeand frequency-selective (doubly selective) multiple-input multiple-output downlink channels. Under a doubly selective propagation condition, a basis expansion model (BEM) is deployed as a fitting parametric model for capturing the time-variation of the MU downlink channels and for...

On the Spectral Efficiency of Noncoherent Doubly Selective Channels

This paper considers block transmissions over single-antenna doubly selective channels that obey a complexexponential basis expansion model. We consider the noncoherent case, when the channel fading coefficients are not known at both transmitter and receiver. We characterize the spectral efficiency of the channel when the inputs are chosen from continuous distributions. Then, we study several p...

Optimal training and redundant precoding for block transmissions with application to wireless OFDM

The adoption of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing by wireless local area networks and audio/video broadcasting standards testifies to the importance of recovering block precoded transmissions propagating through frequency-selective finite-impulse response (FIR) channels. Existing block transmission standards invoke bandwidth-consuming error control codes to mitigate channel fades, and ...
